Privacy policy
Last updated 8 November 2026
This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use afrospatial.com, why, who else handles it, and the rights you have. We collect as little as we need, and we never sell it.
Who we are
afrospatial.com is run by Afrospatial Publishing ("Afrospatial", "we"). We are responsible for your personal data under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 and, for readers in the European Union and the United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation. Questions or requests: info@afrospatial.com.
What we collect and why
Newsletter and magazine sign-ups
When you subscribe, or give your details to read or download an edition of the magazine, we collect your name and email address. We use them to send you the newsletter and new editions of the magazine. We do this with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
The contact form and emails to us
When you use the contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to reply and to deal with your request.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are read, how readers arrive, and their approximate location (country or city), device and browser. Google Analytics sets cookies to do this. We use the results only in aggregate, to decide what to publish and to improve the site.
A note in your browser
After you subscribe, the site stores a small note in your browser's local storage so that it does not ask you to subscribe again. It stays on your device and is not sent to us.
Server logs
Like most websites, our servers record each request (IP address, browser, the page requested and the time). We keep these logs for a short period, for security and to fix problems.
Who else handles your data
We use a few service providers, who process data for us and only on our instructions:
- Formspark receives the sign-up and contact forms and passes them to us.
- Google (Google Analytics) provides the analytics described above.
- Cloudinary delivers the site's images; like any website your browser loads files from, it sees your IP address.
- Our hosting provider runs the servers the site and its content are stored on.
Some of these providers process data outside Kenya, including in the United States and the European Union. We rely on their contractual safeguards for those transfers. We do not sell your data or share it with anyone for their own marketing.
How long we keep it
- Sign-up details: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.
- Contact messages: as long as needed to deal with your request.
- Analytics: no longer than 14 months, the period set in Google Analytics.
- Server logs: a short period, for security.
Your rights
Under Kenya's Data Protection Act and the GDPR you have the right to:
- be told how your data is used (this policy);
- see the personal data we hold about you;
- have it corrected, or deleted;
- object to its use, and withdraw your consent at any time;
- receive it in a portable format.
To use any of these rights, or to unsubscribe, email info@afrospatial.com. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Kenya (odpc.go.ke) or, in the EU or UK, to your local data protection authority.
Cookies
The only cookies on afrospatial.com are Google Analytics cookies (named _ga and _ga_…). You can block or delete them in your browser's settings, or install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on. The site works without them.
Children
Afrospatial is written for professionals and is not directed at children under 18.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we use personal data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will also be announced in the newsletter.
