We welcome articles from surveyors, GIS analysts, remote sensing specialists, planners, researchers and anyone using spatial data to solve real problems. This page explains what we publish and how to send your work so it can go into the magazine as quickly as possible.

What we publish

Features

900–1,500 words

Projects, case studies and research written for professionals outside your speciality. Longer pieces, up to 2,500 words, by agreement with the editors.

Opinion and interviews

800–1,200 words

An argument about where the field is going, or a conversation with someone shaping it.

News

50–200 words

Launches, appointments, events, results and funding, with a link to the source.

Not sure if your idea fits? Send us a short pitch first: three or four sentences on what you want to write and why it matters.

Your text

  • Send a Word document (.docx) or a Google Docs link. Keep it plain: no columns, text boxes or layout.
  • Do not paste photos or charts into the document. Send them as separate files and mark where each goes, for example [Figure 1].
  • Include a headline and a one- or two-sentence summary of the piece.
  • Give your byline exactly as it should be printed: name, role and organisation. Add a 30–50-word bio and a head-and-shoulders photo.
  • Use UK spelling. Spell out abbreviations the first time you use them.
  • Say where your data, figures and quotes come from.
  • Send work that has not been published elsewhere, or tell us where it has appeared.

Photos and graphics

Print needs much larger images than a screen. A photo that looks sharp on your phone can print blurred, and a picture we cannot use at the size it deserves may be cut or left out.

  • Send the original files, as email attachments or through a Google Drive or WeTransfer link.
  • Do not send photos through WhatsApp, and do not take them out of a Word or PowerPoint file: both shrink them.
  • Photos should be at least 3,000 pixels on the long side if they could run large (an opening photo or a full page), and at least 2,000 pixels for anything else. Full-size photos from a modern phone are fine.
  • Send charts, maps and diagrams as the original files (PDF, SVG, or PNG at least 2,000 pixels wide), or the spreadsheet behind a chart. Make sure all labels can be read.
  • Only send graphics you made or have permission to use. No watermarks or other companies' logos.
  • For every image, give a caption (what, where, when) and a credit (the photographer or source). If people are clearly recognisable, make sure they have agreed.

How to submit

  • Email your text, images and bio to content@afrospatial.com, with Submission: and your headline in the subject.
  • Deadlines for each edition are given in the call for articles.
  • The editors read every submission. We may edit for length, clarity and house style.
