Senegalese engineer trains at ESA Academy for NINKI-NANKA Earth observation constellation
Abdoul Aziz Sy Niang, an aerospace engineer at SENSAT Sénégal who works on mission analysis for the NINKI-NANKA project, was one of 15 African participants chosen for an ESA Academy training course on Earth observation satellite design.
The two-week course began in person in Belgium and continued online. African and European engineers and students studied imager engineering and the architecture of imaging platforms. Teaching was provided by ESA specialists and retired agency experts from the ARES association.
NINKI-NANKA is planned as a Senegalese constellation of high-resolution imaging satellites. Niang said the course let him compare the project's design choices with ESA methods. SENSAT thanked the African Space Agency for its support and said the skills will feed directly into the project and into building a skilled space workforce in Senegal.
Why it matters: Training national engineers in imager and platform design builds in-house capacity for Senegal's planned high-resolution constellation. It also shows African space agencies and ESA cooperating on skills for sovereign Earth observation capability.
