Roscosmos and Tanzania sign space pact, with first EO satellite launch set for March 2027
Tanzania's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and Roscosmos agreed a framework memorandum on space cooperation in Moscow on 28 October 2026, alongside the third Russia-Africa Summit. It was signed by Roscosmos director general Dmitry Bakanov and Permanent Secretary Mohammed Khamis Abdulla. Roscosmos says Russia will put Tanzania's first Earth remote-sensing satellite into orbit in March 2027.
The text also envisages Russian expert support for a future Tanzanian space agency, Tanzanian-built spacecraft flown on Russian rockets, remote-sensing data exchange, receiving ground stations in Tanzania, and more Tanzanian students in space disciplines at Russian universities. Joint working groups will prepare roadmaps.
The satellite is distinct from TanSat-1, a 1U CubeSat under the UNOOSA-JAXA KiboCUBE programme. Its specifications, manufacturer and launch vehicle have not been made public.
Why it matters: A first national Earth observation satellite would give Tanzania its own imagery for agriculture, land and environmental work, if ground stations and data-sharing follow. The undisclosed specifications and tight timeline leave delivery uncertain.
