Land survey resumes in Arukani to support Kaani tribal forest rights titles
Land survey work has resumed around Arukani in Kanniyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, India, under the Forest Rights Act, 2006. District Collector M. Prathap inaugurated the work on Tuesday, after residents of Orunoramvayal asked for it during his September visit.
GYOKAP Surveying Training Institute, Chennai, has been engaged to survey land covered by petitions submitted through gram sabhas. These seek individual titles for tribal people in 16 forest settlements in the district. Permission covers 716.79 acres in Arukani settlement, in Kaliyal revenue village, but only 113.31 acres in the Melamannadi area had been surveyed. Orunoramvayal, Pathukani, Katruva and Kallaravayal remained pending. The Director of Tribal Welfare ordered the work to continue, and the District Forest Officer attended the launch.
Why it matters: Ground surveys are the step that turns forest-rights claims into recorded individual titles. The case shows how surveying capacity can bottleneck community land tenure, an issue also relevant to customary and community land programmes elsewhere.
