Lagos marks first GIS Day with LiDAR mapping, Property Bank and AI demonstrations
Lagos State held its first Lagos GIS Day, themed "The Lagos Experience", run by the governor's e-GIS and urban development office with Global Infoswift Consulting Limited managing the programme. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu toured the Land Archive, where paper land records are being archived, and the Ikeja Regional eGIS Centre, where plans for regional centres in Epe, Ikorodu and Badagry were presented.
At the Lagos GIS Centre, officials briefed him on the ABAT III eGIS Data Centre, introduced the Lagos Property Bank and presented the completed digital mapping project, which includes orthophotos and LiDAR imagery. AI applications built on the data were also demonstrated. The day follows the Lagos Geographic Information Service law, signed on 6 October 2025, which created LAGIS and made 6 October Lagos GIS Day. The LAGIS Board was also inaugurated.
Why it matters: A state with a decade of e-GIS work now has a statutory geospatial body, LiDAR and orthophoto coverage, and a digitised archive. This offers a template for land administration and planning in large African cities, though outcomes depend on registry integrity.
