Kenya's space agency, KSA, opened an Earth observation lab (EOIL) at Taita Taveta University in Voi on 3 November 2026. Director General Maj Gen Hillary Kipkosgey, Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kiptanui Too attended.

The lab gives students, researchers, startups, government and civil society access to satellite data, open-source processing tools, training and certification, prototyping space and technical support. Focus areas include agriculture, climate resilience and urban planning.

The project was conceived in 2024 under the EU-funded Data Governance in Africa Initiative, funded by the EU and France, and implemented by Expertise France with KSA. Taita Taveta University and the University of Nairobi host the two pilot labs. Targets for 2028 are over 2,000 annual users, 1,500 people trained and 50 incubated EO-based innovations. Local reports say the Voi lab holds about 26 TB of satellite data and over 100 TB of storage.

Why it matters: The lab gives Kenyan universities, startups and county governments local computing capacity and training for processing satellite data, a common barrier to Earth observation use. It also supports county-level planning and data governance.
