Kenya opens Earth observation innovation lab at Taita Taveta University
The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) launched an Earth Observation Innovation Laboratory (EOIL) at Taita Taveta University in Voi on 3 November 2026. Director General Maj Gen Hillary Kipkosgey opened it with the Taita Taveta County Governor, Andrew Mwadime, and university leadership.
The lab gives students, researchers, startups and institutions access to geospatial data, open-source processing tools, cloud-based computing, training and certification, prototyping space and technical support. Target sectors include agriculture, climate resilience and urban planning.
EOIL was conceived in 2024 under the EU-funded Data Governance in Africa Initiative and is implemented by Expertise France with KSA, funded by the EU and France. Taita Taveta University and the University of Nairobi were chosen as the two hosts from 18 applicants in May 2025. By 2028 the programme aims for over 2,000 annual users, 1,500 people trained and 50 incubated EO-based innovations.
Why it matters: Local compute, open tools and training lower the barrier for Kenyan universities and startups to turn free satellite data into usable products. It also gives county governments a nearby source of EO skills for planning and resource management.
