Kenya Advances Utility-Scale Solar and Wind with Geospatial Energy Model
In May 2025, a peer-reviewed study introduced a geospatial energy model to optimize utility-scale solar and wind power development in Kenya. Published in Cell Reports Sustainability, the model integrates enhanced solar and wind resource data into the Open-source Energy Modelling System (OSeMOSYS) for Kenya. This initiative, led by researchers including Millot A., supports Kenya’s renewable energy goals by identifying optimal locations for energy infrastructure, reducing planning costs, and enhancing energy access. The model aids policymakers and energy planners in aligning with Kenya’s sustainable development targets, potentially influencing energy strategies across East Africa. This is a significant step for Kenya’s renewable energy sector, addressing energy access challenges for millions while promoting environmentally sustainable development.
