Geoscience Australia upgrades AUSPOS GPS processing service to version 3.1
Geoscience Australia put version 3.1 of AUSPOS, its free online GPS processing service, into production on 20 October 2026. The main change is a move from Bernese v5.2, which is no longer supported, to Bernese v5.4. Models were also updated, including ocean tidal loading (FES2014b), troposphere, sub-daily polar motion, signal biases and orbit modelling.
In a comparison of about 2,300 jobs from the National GNSS Campaign Archive, more than 92% showed coordinate differences between v3.0 and v3.1 within their 95% confidence-level uncertainties. A small share of jobs may differ by more, partly because Bernese v5.4 removes more poor-quality observations. Geoscience Australia advises treating v3.1 results as preferable to earlier v3.0 solutions.
AUSPOS handles over 200,000 jobs a year, about 70% from Australian users, and works with data from anywhere in the world. It follows the v3.0 release of August 2024.
Why it matters: Surveyors and geodesists using AUSPOS may see small coordinate shifts when reprocessing older jobs. The service accepts data collected anywhere, so users elsewhere, including in Africa, can use it for ITRF-aligned positions, though outputs are tied to Australian datums.
