Frontex and ESA agree to explore closer Earth observation cooperation

Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher signed a joint letter in Warsaw on 13 October 2026. It confirms existing collaboration on Earth observation and asks technical teams to explore closer cooperation.

Since 2015, ESA has supplied satellite data, on behalf of the European Commission, to the Copernicus border surveillance service run by Frontex. Under contribution agreements with the Commission's DG DEFIS, both agencies have also tested solutions from emerging EU space companies against border and coast guard needs.

The letter highlights ESA's planned Warsaw centre, focused on security and resilience, which should allow more frequent technical exchanges. Promising areas have been identified under the European Resilience from Space initiative. Frontex said the talks remain exploratory and within each agency's mandate.

Why it matters: The move shows Copernicus data being steered towards operational, governmental use and towards commercial European EO suppliers. Practitioners elsewhere can read it as a model for how agencies test new satellite services against operational requirements.
