Teledyne FLIR launches A8481 compact HD MWIR science camera
Teledyne FLIR has launched the A8481, a mid-wave infrared science camera built around a 1280 × 1024 HOT MWIR SLS detector with an 8 µm pitch. It offers four times the pixels of VGA A-Series cameras in the compact A67xx body, so existing optics, mounting, software and integration can be reused.
Thermal sensitivity is below 30 mK. The camera supports GigE Vision, GenICam and CoaXPress, with trigger and synchronisation functions and an integrated three-position motorised filter wheel for wider temperature ranges. Windowed modes reach 13,733 Hz, and radiometric .ATS recording is supported in FLIR Research Studio Professional.
Target uses include electronics analysis, battery research, combustion, propulsion testing, non-destructive testing and materials characterisation. The A8481 is available from October 2026 through FLIR's sales representatives and channel partners.
Why it matters: The camera is a laboratory thermal instrument rather than a mapping or Earth observation product. It has limited direct relevance to geospatial practitioners, beyond showing radiometric thermal imaging moving to higher resolution in compact hardware.
