Farmers at Meta Umri village in Hingna taluka, Nagpur district, India, opposed a land survey that began on Thursday for the proposed Third Outer Ring Road. The Shetkari Sangharsh Samiti says the administration began work without announcing compensation criteria, despite what farmers describe as an assurance from the district collector at an earlier meeting.

The 148-km, Rs13,700 crore project was approved by the Maharashtra government on 3 September 2025. Farmers at Bori Rani village in Parseoni taluka had earlier forced a halt to surveying.

Landowners are asking for transparency on land valuation, market rates and compensation, and for surveys to be suspended until criteria are formally announced. They have warned of stronger protests if the administration does not honour its commitments.

Why it matters: Parcel surveys for linear infrastructure depend on landowner consent and clear compensation rules. The dispute shows how unresolved valuation can stall field survey work, a pattern relevant to land acquisition projects elsewhere, including in Africa.
