Africa launches continental satellite-based nowcasting facility
Africa has launched the African Meteorological Satellite Application Facility (AMSAF), its first continental satellite-based nowcasting system, to significantly improve short-term weather forecasting (0-6 hours). Using data from Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites, the initiative will establish regional nowcasting centres across the continent to deliver timely, locally tailored warnings for extreme weather events. The project, supported by the African Union, EUMETSAT, and the EU, aims to strengthen early warning systems, enhance disaster preparedness, and build indigenous meteorological capacity across Africa.
