10th AfriGEO Symposium in Abuja marks a decade of African Earth observation
The 10th AfriGEO Symposium ran from 5 to 8 October 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria, hosted by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) under the theme "Earth Observation for a Resilient Africa". More than 400 participants attended, ten years after the first edition in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Nigeria's Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology opened the main event. Keynotes covered Earth observation for resilience, the African space economy and climate finance. South Africa, Senegal, Nigeria, Kenya and Madagascar gave national GEO updates, and Togo and Benin were welcomed into the community. A pre-symposium day offered training on flood forecasting, crop mapping, AI and cloud-based Earth observation. Sessions also examined fragmented access to very-high-resolution imagery, investable EO projects and impact-based early warning. The Youth community presented GeoShapers Mission 1 urban heat tools, built with Esri. The meeting closed with a communiqué and recommendations.
Why it matters: The agenda moved from data availability to infrastructure, financing, costly high-resolution imagery and operational early warning. Those are the constraints African agencies and EO practitioners face, and the outcomes will shape AfriGEO's 2026–2036 implementation plan.
